I had the absolute joy of photographing Claire and Ian’s engagement session here, and these two brought so much warmth, love, and laughter to the summer evening. This park is one of my favorite hidden gems for engagement photography. Located in Chantilly, it offers the perfect mix of open meadows, wooded trails, and rustic charm. How the Humidity Gave Us a Dreamy Surprise
Most of the time Something kind of magical happened during Claire and Ian’s session. It was one of those hot, humid Virginia evenings. At one point, I noticed a bit of condensation had formed on one of my lenses because of the sudden temperature shift. Normally, that might be a photographer’s nightmare. In this case, it actually made the photos look even dreamier. The soft haze added this romantic, almost cinematic glow that matched the mood of the evening. Instead of fighting it, I embraced it. Those turned out to be some of my favorite shots from the entire session.
While I usually love photographing during golden hour with warm sunlight, I’ve learned not to stress when the clouds roll in. Overcast skies can actually bring out something really special. The light is softer, more even, and it creates this calm, romantic atmosphere. It works beautifully for engagement photos. There’s less squinting, fewer harsh shadows, and a more intimate vibe overall. It might not be the dreamy sun-soaked look every time, but honestly, cloudy days have their own kind of magic.
What I loved most about this session was how laid-back it felt. We didn’t rush. We walked, talked, and just let the evening unfold. I’m so excited to photograph their wedding this September at Belmont Country Club!
